FAVORITE FOOD AND TRAVEL SPOTS IN MAZUNTE (OAXACA)
Are you traveling to Oaxaca, Mexico and looking for a laid back beach town with a unique atmosphere? Then check out my travel guide to the cute little town called Mazunte, one of my favorite parts on our trip to Puerto Escondido.
As you maybe read in my travel and food guide to Puerto Escondido, I was in love immediately with Oaxaca and Puerto. I did still have quite high expectations for Mazunte, as I have heard of the unique atmosphere and vibe already. Still, my expectations were more than met immediately as we walked around this cute little beach town. The people were all extremely friendly and the restaurants were just super laid-back and chilled.
One of the reasons I loved Mazunte so much was for sure our amazing Airbnb called Monte Cangrejo which was situated directly at the beach. We actually had to watch out for too high waves as we really entered via the ocean. Our bed was outside (with a mosquito net) so we were able to hear the waves (which were at the beginning actually quite loud) and even sometimes felt a tiny shake due to the immense waves.
Like in Puerto Escondido, Mazunte offers a wide variety of great restaurants with vegan food options and the vibe of the beach bars is just unique. We really felt like back in the 60s (not like I would know haha). There one really “funny” thing happened: I enjoyed the typical Mezcal, which is the traditional spirit in Oaxaca. Most of the time you get it either mixed with fresh fruits or pure as a shot. Then the bar serves the Mezcal with oranges and spices. This time, however, I also got some fried flowers - at least that was what I assumed. Well, tuns out those were fried bugs, a local specialty. I did realize it immediately, luckily, but it was really funny how you think you are eating something and enjoy it and then you are really disgusted hahaha.
Other than that we were enjoyed really good food and even found a local taqueria where they served authentic (vegan) tacos for only 0,1€ per piece! Make sure to check out my detailed review of the food and drink places we went to below.
Have you ever heard of the tiny beach town Mazunte?
Did you ever eat something “exotic” while you were on holiday or “enjoyed” something you would not eat at home?
I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Lots of love,

Tips for your perfect time in Mazunte
Restaurants and bars:
Cevichela (apero/ snacks/ bar)
Really cool and chilled place for enjoying an apero (which I learned to love since I spent so much time in Switzerland) with a delicious guacamole and a beer. The seating area is really nice as well!
Nutopia (breakfast/ vegan options)
New coffee and brunch place owned by a German and his friends. We loved to hear his story of ending up in Mazunte and enjoyed the breakfast bowls as well.
Cometa Café Mazunte (breakfast/ coffee/ vegan options)
One of the best coffees we had in Mexico! They are roasting it themselves and thus it is really really good! There are also some (vegan) breakfast options and it seems like the place to meet everyone as it is located quiet centrally.
Tiburon Juice Bar (smoothie/ breakfast)
Nice tiny place offering smoothies in all variations as well as smoothie bowls and other breakfast options. Quiet popular and as everything is made fresh you might have to wait a bit.
Terraza del arquitecto (breakfast/ vegan options)
Nice place for great breakfast and juices looking over the ocean. There is a decent wifi connection but even if it fails you can just jump into the water and get back to some reading or your laptop.
La Pizzeria (dinner/ vegan options)
Neglect the not very original name, the pizza is simply delicious! I was very sceptic about eating pizza in Mexico but this place also convinced me!
Huitzili (dinner/ vegan options)
We enjoyed our first dinner in Mazunte at this lovely place and were really in love immediately! The cocktails are super refreshing and the food (we had a Thai curry and a falafel plate) super tasty! Don’t miss it if you come to Mazunte!Taquería El Delfín (dinner/ vegan options)
Best authentic tacos which is one of the favorites by the locals. We enjoyed three tacos each with mushrooms, tomatoes, more veggies and lots of fresh cilantro. One taco was only 0,4€!
Transportation
There are many options to get to Mazunte like renting a car, scooter or taking a organized shuttle. We opted for the scooter is it was a “just” one hour drive in a really straight road. Also it is a nice way to take a short break in less touristic areas and enjoy a fresh coconut for 0,80 €. If you do ask them to cut your coconut as they are more than happy to serve you the coconut flesh with lime, spices and sauces - so delicious! You can walk around Mazunte if you are staying in the main area but we really enjoyed to live a bit outside of the main road and thus really were happy for our scooter.
Accomodation
When we planned our trip to Mexico and Mazunte it was soon clear that there was one place we really needed to stay at and that was the Airbnb Monte Cangrejo. There are three tiny houses built in the rocks, offering you everything that you need. Located really at playa Mermejita, we entered when the waves were allowing it and slept outside with the sounds of the waves. There was a nice outside seating area, a outdoor shower and a kitchen area. The sunset view was just breathtaking, so make sure to stay at this wonderful place if you can!
Money
There is one ATM in Mazunte, yes only one so better come prepared as it also runs out of cash from time to time and apparently only is refilled on Mondays. It is located next to el rinconcito de Mazunte and most places accept cash only.
